If you look inside a Sporto model of the 50th with scew bottom You'll see an elastic o ring between the movement and the case side The same device is in the S 58 but in a stronger case.This is the reason I think that S means an improved Sporto,moreover this model was introduced at the eve of the Geophisic Year (1958) Many watches were dedicated to that event : Geomatic by Le Coultre, Super G by Gruen ,Atomium by Tecnos and so on.
