Chopard's successful and long running partnership as sponsor and official timekeeper of the Mille Miglia is in its 25th year. Keen driver Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, co-president of the Geneva-based firm participates in the race and is an avid collector of classic cars. It was while participating in the race that he encountered Andrea Zagato, owner of the Italian bodywork specialist bearing the family name, and his wife Marella Rivolta.

Chopard and Zagato are both independent family businesses with a passion for details and the pursuit of excellence. Since 1919, the atelier founded by Ugo Zagato in Milan has worked with some of the greatest car manufacturers including Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati, Aston Martin, Bentley and the brand that has perhaps most defined the company’s reputation, Alfa Romeo. Zagato Alfas won 4 Mille Miglias: 1928, 1929, 1930, 1933.

Zagato has remained an independent and family-owned company whose main speciality has always been that of Grand Tourer cars, and it’s this that inspired the first collaborative efforts between the Geneva and Milan-based companies to produce the Mille Miglia Zagato.

The new Chopard Mille Miglia has undergone the exclusive Zagato personalisation process. The ‘engine’ or movement is a self-winding chronograph with date and dual-time displays. It was chosen by Chopard for its reliability and sturdiness and is the calibre which normally powers the Mille Miglia watches.

The movement is officially certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute, the COSC, The 42.5mm case is in steel with a DLC coating. It comes in two variations: one all-black and the other fitted with a rose gold bezel featuring a red insert featuring the 24-hour dual-time graduation.

The start/stop chronograph pusher matches the colour of the bezel, which is either black or in rose gold. In both versions, it features a red-lacquered tip, the colour of both Zagato and the Mille Miglia.

The strap is typical of the work of Zagato; its lines featuring a distinctive central groove echo its ‘double bubble’ roof, while the bright red stitching on the leather is a well known Zagato signature feature.The Mille Miglia Zagato is a 500-piece limited edition series for the black DLC-coated steel version and the same number for the two-tone version with an 18-carat rose gold finish.
