Daniel, son of well known watchmaker Armin Strom, has embraced the current skull/ Twilight obsession in a series of gothic skull inspired watches he calls the Argonium collection.
Daniel opened his collection with Memento Mori Carpe Diem, translated as ‘Remember that you will die and seize the day’. He now adds to the collection with Memento Mori Carpe Noctem, remember that you will die and seize the night. Behind its many gothic curves, incisions and cut-outs lies the same attention to detail as the original watch. And behind the blood-red dial we are told lies the ancestral Japanese art of Urushi.
The bone dial has given way to the red Urushi dial. This intense vermilion hue is achieved with cinnabar pigments colouring the unique lacquer, formerly favoured for its durability and long-term stability but which has distinguished itself as an ornamental element. The red of the dial is matched by the rubies in the eyes of the skulls and the bright red over stitching on the strap.
The lacquer artist seized the day, and no doubt the night over three weeks in order to apply over 20 ultra fine layers to the dial. The Roman numerals are in white in a suitably Gothic font.
The watch is powered by an ETA 2824 movement housed in a black rhodium-coated solid silver 925 case with stainless steel interior. The watch also features an anti-glare double curved sapphire crystal, and is water-resistant to a splashproof 50m.
The strap is of black Hornback alligator leather with a skull pin buckle in solid 925 silver, with red overstitching,
The asking price is around $15,250, so you will have to seize a lot of nights in terms of overtime if you want to get your hands on one.
